Week 4

Elder Nelson, Elder England and Henry
I made it through Fast Sunday! I didn't even feel sick and I didn't die so it was good. While Sunday was full of the spirit, it was also the hardest day I have had. Focusing was hard, and I realized also that I am so flawed. I sometimes doubt I should even be here. I feel unworthy at times. This week was hard.

I am glad you enjoyed my letter, I'll send another soon. And I know the language will come eventually!

Life always works out. I realized that most of my trials occur because of my choices because I am truly blessed. I am glad you think so highly of me but I really am not so great. I don't mean to be down on myself but I just know I am not that fantastic. Thank you though. That is kind of you to say!

In the end I think people should be happy. It is difficult to discern what is true happiness and what the world views as happiness. I know though that the Lord is always the better choice. Tell Lil I love her.

Thank you for the emails and the packages I love you! and Thank you for sending a camera! I haven't gotten it yet but I am stoked for when I do!

I love you and I will spend some time writing actual letters for you.

The gift of tongues is real. I could not be where I am without it. Still I am pretty behind hahaha I am not worried but still I am a little behind. I am trying my hardest to be the best I can be!

I got your packages! your cookies were amazing!! THANK YOU!!!! we loved them. And I have been eatn popcorn, cheetos and top ramen every night after class. SO THANK YOU SO MUCH!! truly the best part of my week is when I receive packages and letters!

The food is good, and I haven't gained weight but a lot of people have haha i am weird I guess. I just eat whatever they have and a lot of it. hahaha I am going to get chubby yay!

I do miss you a lot and You are my favorite mom haha

Could you send me a camera? i haven't had one for 2 weeks and I need one!!!
I love you so much and I will write you letters in like ten minutes but you'll get them tomorrow!!!!
Elder C

Sorry I wasn't there to make family dinner so much better! I am also sorry I am not there to keep you in line! sorry bout it. Here the food is only OK. I miss Mom's cooking and the great food I ate all the time!
I loved the packages!!!! I had a really hard week and they helped me feel better. so thank you!
You are a good teacher though, so I know that no matter what, what you are doing is good. There is no better thing you could be teaching. Plus kids need your example and complex view of the world and gospel in their lives.

I really do miss family dinner. I miss seeing all of my cousins and aunts and uncles and I miss nana and papa and gram and reed. I miss all yall.
Zhongwen is a language that requires most of my thoughts so I don't think about things outside of Chinese a lot, but when I do I realize how blessed I was! Though it is terribly sad that family dinners are less and less of a frequent event. I guess I was the glue! hahajk but I hope that we can all have at least one more upon my return.

I have had dreams where I get hit by a car or die from a mosquito bite and I am very fearful sometimes. I know I shouldn't be but I get worried. I think though most of all I don't fear for my own life, I just don't think Our family could handle it..

Anyways, thank you for the advice, and I hope you know I really am doing good. I pray for you every single day. I fast for you as well.
Love you all, Love Elder Christensen

A fault in our MTC

This week the MTC was a good time. I constantly see Elders who I know from school, and I love the people I am surrounded by here. The best part of my week was probably receiving a package from the Brubaker family. They sent me cookies from paradise bakery and a few heart warming notes. The cookies went fast, were delicious and now EVERYONE loves the Brubaker’s.
    I feel myself change every day. I think I have only been able to realize that because I have been thinking of my future a lot. I see myself sitting on a plane waiting to arrive in Tokyo and then Taiwan. What a wonderful day that will be haha. But I also have been able to recognize the difference because I have seen it in every other missionary I know.
This morning I woke up and the only Elder I haven't gotten along with was ironing my shirt.. the MTC changes people. If you let it change you there is no way that the change will be bad. But if you fight it and don't give yourself to the Lord, you will notice everyone become their best selves while you stay the same. I am so imperfect. I have so many things to work on. An elder in my district began crying one night because he felt so bad for feeling angry at another elder. That is not normal. But it is wonderful. We are all trying to because worthy tools for the Lords work. Its subtle but looking back. I am a different person.
I have to say my favorite day altogether was Sunday because of the events that took place. I started off with a 5 hour "Yingwen" fast in which I did not speak a word of English. I did it for a bet and won 75 cents from the sisters in my district.. BOOYAHHH. haha

After that we went to sacrament and it was cool because now I can understand a lot more of what the speakers are saying (all talks, hymns, and prayers are in Mandarin) The meeting was neat and the talks were good. We are supposed to write one every week because they just pick randomly who will speak so you always have to be prepared. This week my talk was on repentance and I must say it was a killer Chinese talk. haha
 After sacrament and priesthood we have a district meeting where we discuss what we could do better and such. Then one of us gives a lesson. I haven't given a lesson but they aren't really lessons anyways. The topic is given and then everyone just piles on stories and scriptures and their testimony's and it is wonderful. That is definitely a highlight of my Sunday. But the best part came next.
Each Sunday we go on a temple walk, and my zone always meets above the temple on a hill. This spot has a view that will take your breath away. The entire valley with a temple and lake really make for a wonderful sight. The view is always nice but what hit me hard was when some sisters started singing.. We sang a lot of hymns and I loved them all, but when we started singing "God Be With You Till We Meet Again" I started to cry.
Even now writing this I feel the Spirit. I believe that because I am overjoyed and sorrowful at the same time, and that is something only good things can bring. I miss a lot of people. Later we had a devotional and the speaker was hilarious, then we watched Characters of Christ (A talk by David L. Bednar from about five years ago) and that made me cry too. It was amazing.
You'll notice if you ever leave a place it's not the things you miss but the people. I had so many wonderful friends and family. People are what I miss. Though I love it here I miss people... SO God Be With You Till We Meet Again.
I love you and miss you!

Week 2 in the MTC

Hi Family,
I am glad you miss me! haha Well, like mom promised, letters and packages mean a lot. I have received two letters in total and one package, and I am extremely grateful for that! It has been hard here. The language is killer and sometimes I feel hopeless. BUT. there are also times when I feel I could move mountains. And that makes it all worth it. But please! Stop talking about my foods Douglas. I miss steak and I miss wings so stahp. haha

How was your hike? I remember having dried blood on my face from tripping and being 7 I felt like a man so I just left it there.

I love the Schwartz family. Paul is a sterling example of a knowledgeable missionary. My companion is similar (meaning he knows a lot), but he doesn't know how to teach it so we are learning together and we have been able to grow closer through that, but we aren't that close. He is quiet so we don't talk too much.  I definitely like him a lot though. The only problem is that he likes to take his time and I hate being late to things, so it's been stressful. But even worse is my district leader who is the messiest guy around. haha I am dying here. Our room inspection got all A's except for him and they said he needs to work on it haha.

I have been doing pushups and sit ups every morning to get in shape then we head up to the fields and run around for a few miles then play soccer so the exercise is awesome and we have fun. I have made some great friends here. There are two in my district who I really like, Elder Jensen and Elder Pincock, and then a few in a neighboring district. Among them is Elder Perkins who is seriously a stellar guy. We share a lot of interests but he also has a girl at home and so we relate to each other a lot through that. This is good because I miss Mattie a lot and it's nice to be able to talk about it with someone.

I just got back from initiatories and on my way out was a group of Olympus/ensemble friends haha. John Newton, Ryan Tatton, and a whole bunch of others were waiting for me at the door haha. So it was awesome being able to see them. Ryan Tatton comes into the MTC this week so I'll see him again fairly soon hah.  Anyways, I just sent you a package with my broken camera and the shoes that didn't fit which I talk more about in the letter I sent. That letter also contains a list that must be regarded with the utmost scrutiny. I sent the SD card with the camera so you can download the pictures at home. But my camera broke right before I took a picture, so my companion took this pic on his camera.
Here are pictures of all the Olympus kids we could find!
This next week is going to be intense so get ready for a letter that will not be for the faint of heart. I am doing my laundry right now and I must say, I am a pro. Bet ma will be proud.
UMMMMMM... It rained the other day and now I am super excited for Taiwan. Because it was like 90 degrees while it was raining haha so it seems pretty similar. I loved it though. I am super excited to make it to Taiwan. It will be a whirl wind.
Alright, I love you all like I say in the letter and hope your days are filled with countless blessings
Love,
Elder Christensen

First week in the MTC

 I GOT YOUR LETTERS~ but I am waiting to read them till I have time to sit down and reply to them, which I am going to do today hopefully. I don't have a passport holder and I could always use some cheetos haha jkjk. But maybe some pills, like advil and claritin would be nice :D
My companion is Elder Griffin. He is from Syracuse and is awesome! like I said in that other email, there are six of us and about 3 of them are from the same town as Elder Griffin. They are all really hard workers and very loving guys. We all help each other get better and it's amazing how much I have changed and learned in just a few days.
The days are like months here but the weeks go by fast, so it's a weird thing but kinda fun. I have been falling asleep in every setting and I hope it's because I have been sick. But if not, I'll just have to train myself to stay active and awake.
SO yes. My P days are Mondays and we woke up at 6 sharp to go to the temple and just got back. The session was about 3 hours long and I could feel my love for my companion and district growing in that short time.
I am so bad at writing but I am trying hard. I will improve!!

(later that day)...

Your letters were awesome! Haha I miss Ethan, Rosie and both of you. This week was awesome! very busy, like I said, but I am loving it. My companions name is Elder Griffin and he's a stellar guy. He is a genius when it comes to Chinese so I am trying to keep up. We have six elders in our room and it's actually really fun! We spend a large part of our day for studying Chinese and the other part either eating or studying Preach My Gospel. I have seen so many guys from OLY. I see Elders: Spurrier, Jones, Burton, Anderton, Ellsworth, Pettit, Flynn, and Evans quite frequently. I have been sick the entire time here but an elder in my district, Elder Pincock who I'll tell you more about later, hooked me up with the drugs. SO i am feeling happy. :D
The first or second day, I can't remember which because they blend together, we were able to talk to real investigators as a crowd and it was great to see their reactions. The spirit was soo strong and I developed a love for them instantly. The first of those investigators was named Sarah and she was SAAAASSSY. Every remark an elder made was instantly shut down. It was kind of funny. Until we were able to teach with the spirit instead of knowledge she wouldn't listen.
My companion and I have now taught twice with the same investigator in Chinese. She is awesome, and because she is an actor, she agrees with everything we say. Our broken Chinese is getting us far. We teach 3 times this week so that will be very fun. Last night we went to a Sunday night devotional and the topic was "Charity." It was an amazing talk and I learned a lot. I had some scriptures written down but we came straight from the temple so all my notes are gone. I am going to try to spend a long time writing notes today.

ADELIDE I MET ELDER TAYLOR. He is serving in England (I think) but because he is speaking Chinese I see him around. That is so crazy that we are in the MTC at the same time!!
I love it here and I am at a loss of words and running low on time to do anything, so I will spend a lot longer on my handwritten letters to you. Love you all!!

Forward this to Doug. Get him on this train!

Elder Ke Zhanglao

(even later that day)...

I have a few more minutes. So I'll see what I can fit in. I am a very slow typer and it is hindering my ability to write well. We started having gym time on Friday and we played soccer. It had just rained so it was really funny watching 40 elders try to kick a ball around but just slipping and falling every time. Haha my district led with the most goals and it was way fun. Then on Saturday we played beach volleyball and it was way fun but being at the mtc they don't want us to keep score. So I don't know who won but it was fun. My district leader and I were in the back waiting for the ball to come and we both dove for it and I broke my pinky.

JK
We just sprayed each other with sand and I got sand in every hole on my head. My nose and ear took a good hour to clean out haha
It was really nice to get outside!

Alright I have to go now but I love you and I'll send letters soon! LOVE YOU
YES THAT IS JAMISON ! haha  I hope you enjoy my photographs. because i pour my heart and soul into them.

Dear Elder Christensen,

FAREWELL TALK:

Thank you’s to Lillie for speaking,
Thank you’s to Kristin, Lucy and Ford for playing,
Mention quickly a friends testimony on Hie to Kolob and how powerful verse four is verse 4.
There is no end to virtue;
There is no end to might;
There is no end to wisdom;
There is no end to light.
There is no end to union;
There is no end to youth;
There is no end to priesthood;
There is no end to truth.
I love that hymn. thanks again.
I was going to begin with that same line, but knowing you are all here to hear lillie and not me makes me less nervous so we’ll go with that. I would like to start off by telling you everything I know and everything you should know about Taiwan - it is hot and very humid. That’s all.
I was asked to speak on President Uchtdorf's conference talk titled “are you sleeping through the restoration.” He talks about ways to be prepared in this day of restoration of the gospel, mentioning that problems like addictions, selfishness, and competing priorities can make it difficult for us to focus on the work at hand. I would like to focus on one aspect of his talk, but instead of selfishness, I would like to focus on selflessness.  In the April 2013 General Conference David L. Beck gave a talk titled “Your Sacred Duty to Minister.” I am always moved by the story he tells about a girl named Chy Johnson.
“When Chy started high school last year, she became the victim of cruel and thoughtless bullying. She was mistreated, shoved, and taunted as she walked to class—some students even threw garbage at her. You have probably seen people mistreated like this in your school too.
For too many people, the teenage years are a time of loneliness and fear. It doesn’t have to be this way. Fortunately for Chy, there were young men at her school who understood what it means to minister.
Chy’s mother had asked teachers at the school to help stop the bullying, but it continued. She then contacted Carson Jones, an Aaronic Priesthood holder and the starting quarterback of the football team. She asked him to help her find out who was doing the bullying.
Carson agreed to help, but in his heart he felt that he could do much more than just identify the bullies. The Spirit whispered to him that he needed to help Chy feel loved.
Carson asked some of his teammates to join him in ministering to Chy. They invited her to sit with them during lunch. They walked her to class to make sure she was safe. Not surprisingly, with football players as her close friends, no one bullied Chy anymore.
This was an exciting season for the football team. But even with the thrill of an undefeated season, these young men did not forget about Chy. They invited her to join the team on the field after games. Chy felt loved and appreciated. She felt safe. She was happy.
The football team went on to win the state title. But something more important than a football championship happened at their school. The example of these young men has motivated other students to be more accepting, more friendly. They now treat each other with more kindness and respect.
National news media found out what these young men had done and shared their story across the country. What began as an effort to minister to one is inspiring thousands of others to do the same.
Chy’s mother calls these young men “angels in disguise.” Carson and his friends are quick to say that Chy has blessed their lives much more than they blessed hers. That’s what happens when you lose yourself in serving others—you find yourself.” (Pause) Like I said, I love this story, maybe it’s because of my little sister Lillie or maybe it’s because the boys were star football players like me (pause for laughs). As I have prepared to leave I’ve realized that being selfless, like those brethren, is not so easy. Like everyone else, I have had a lot on my plate this year. While trying to prepare for a mission, while trying to figure out exactly what I wanted to do with my future, while going to school and work almost everyday, I fought the common teenage battle of trying to think about other people’s problems in addition to my own.
When explaining stress management to a class, a lecturer raised a glass of water to the crowd. Instead of asking if the glass was half full or half empty he asked, "how heavy is this glass of water?" Answers from the audience ranged from 20 to 60 grams. The lecturer replied, "The absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it."
"If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to call an ambulance. "In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes."
He continued, "And that's the way it is with stress. If we carry burdens from our faults all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on." This year should have been easy, and compared to the lives of many others, it probably was. But on a relative scale it seemed more stressful than it should have been. I noticed often that my competing priorities got the best of me.
I was sort of a slacker getting my missionary plaque ordered (you know, the one they put in the hall out there) -- I procrastinated with taking the picture because my mom didn’t like my hair and when I cut it, I shaved the sides for a sweet mohawk before our family trip to Lake Powell. (pause) So it took a while to have an acceptable haircut... But, I did choose my mission scripture a while ago when it jumped out at me during some personal study of the Book of Mormon. The verse, Alma 33:23 reads: “And now, my brethren, I desire that ye shall plant this word in your hearts, and as it beginneth to swell even so nourish it by your faith. And behold, it will become a tree, springing up in you unto everlasting life. And then may God grant unto you that your burdens may be light, through the joy of his Son. And even all this can ye do if ye will. Amen.” Originally I just liked the simple message of attaining anything if you just will, that’s a pretty awesome promise. But then I received my patriarchal blessing, I found a more meaningful message. This was a great experience for me so I have shared it before, some of you are lucky to hear it twice. (pause) My junior year I became a debater, specializing in oratory/speaking. I really liked to speak. So I was excited when in my patriarchal blessing I was blessed with the power to speak to those I teach on my mission. But after I received that blessing, I got my call to Taiwan. Now, I like speaking well enough, but this really shocked me because I can’t speak more than a few words of chinese and I had a blessing to speak well to the people of Taiwan, in Mandarin. I cannot express enough gratitude for that blessing. Constantly I am asked if I am afraid to learn such a difficult language, and though I know it will be hard, but I feel calm. I know that if I will, I can do just about anything.
I am grateful for ... ( spend a little on each of these )
my call - the chance to go somewhere so great
my dad - helped me become a hard worker - still need work though hehe
my sisters - each one
    hannah for her strength to always stand tall
    adelide for her example of serving a mission
    lillie for her great talk, loving spirit and kindness to everyone.
my grandparents - both sides for support
my aunts, uncles and cousins for their love and support for me and for the several missionary examples
my friends - examples of strength and for keeping me mostly out of trouble
the gospel
the book of mormon - I was able to read it this year
the temple
for prayer
& patriarchal blessings...
There are so many of you who have blessed my life... but none have given so much of their time and care as my mother. MOM, I am grateful for you
Planting the seed is as easy as praying each night, but it’s my testimony that if you can lose yourself in service to others, and if I can lose myself in service to the people of Taiwan, blessings will come in force and the tree of everlasting life will spring forth.
In the name of Jesus Christ Amen
